WTH is Cynopraxic dog training?

Updated: Feb 17, 2023

I could go into a lot of detail about about the Greek history and meaning of the words Cyno and Praxis but that would bore everyone but me so I'm going to explain what you need to know instead of everything I know. Cynopraxic dog training is based on the idea that a dog will be more willing to offer desired behaviors if it has a close bond with the person asking for them and is compensated fairly at the same time. The ultimate goal of Cynopraxic dog training is to improve the human/dog bond while improving the dog's quality of life. All of the drills and exercises we use are designed with these two goals in mind. Dog's are much happier when they trust in their owners leadership and know they are being provided for.

Steven Lindsay in his book series Handbook of Applied Dog Behavior and Training defined it as, Cynopraxic training proceeds on the assumption that dogs and people possess a shared capacity to establish relations based on fair exchange. Such training promotes cognitive, emotional, and behavioral changes conducive social competence, cooperation, and play. Cynopraxic training objectives are governed by two essential social and life experience criteria: (1) enhance the human-dog relationship and (2) improve the dog’s quality of life.
